We believe passionately that every child no matter what age or background should have the chance to learn to play a musical instrument and to this end we have put in place a hire scheme.

Instruments are available for hire to students living in Torbay and surrounding areas which can be hired out on a termly basis at considerably reduced rates. They exist to enable young people to take up instrument tuition without the commitment of purchasing an expensive instrument, or, in the case of stringed instruments, one which the student will ‘grow out of’ and is a good way to 'try out' an instrument before you buy.

We have everything from flutes to bassoons, trumpets to tubas, violins to double basses. The stock is limited and hired out on a first come first served basis so parents should contact us as early in the term as possible. We can then introduce you to suppliers who have a variety of schemes in order to make buying an instrument easier.

For those unable to afford to buy then we can enter into longer-term hire agreements.

It is recommended that prospective hirers contact us to check the availability of the required instrument, before completing the application form.

Buying an instrument

Students are encouraged to buy their own instrument when they feel they are ready. We can direct families to schemes to make the cost of buying an instrument easier to manage. Please contact us in plenty of time so that we can help you with this.

Certain instruments are classified as ‘Endangered Species’ so in order to encourage take-up, we subsidise the hire cost of these instruments further.

School instruments

Every primary school is given a grant to allow the possibility of introducing their pupils to the joys of music making by learning to play an instrument. Please ask your school about their provision.
