The Past

1997 - Torbay

The first Walk To School event in Torbay was held in 1997.  Seven schools took part in the Bay and were asked to make a commitment to continue promoting Walking To School as the most desirable way of getting to school by:
  1. Developing a school policy stating that the school actively endorses walking as the most beneficial method of transporting children to school. This would be included in any induction literature given to pupils and parents
  2. Producing a statement along the lines of: '........School actively promote Walking To School as it gives the children an opportunity to exercise, cuts down pollution and congestion from cars so it is healthier and safer way to travel. This demonstrates our schools commitment to improving the health of our pupils and teachers and safe guarding the health of the local community.'
  3. Actively encouraging pupils to walk by example, involving parents as the best way to encourage this, discussion, displaying the schools policy on actively promoting walking, taking part in safe journeys to school, holding Walk To School days on a more frequent basis. The event was also linked with the Don't Choke Britain campaign.
