Water is a precious resource. Climate change scenarios indicate that the South West of England could receive up to a 50% reduction in summer rainfall by 2080. As levels of development increase in to the future, demands for water are also likely to increase. This demand for water is unsustainable, especially considering the likely impacts of climate change.
The process involved to purify water to safe drinking levels also contributes to increased carbon emissions and therefore adds to the greenhouse effect.
Ways to reduce water consumption in new developments:
- Water Conservation - limiting the overall water use of developments (can often be achieved through careful design and the use of water efficient utilities at very low financial costs)
- Waste water recycling - reusing grey-water (e.g. bath and sink water) for toilet flushing water, etc.
- Rainwater harvesting - collecting rainwater and utilising it in the new development
