The ability for people to access a development through effective transportation has always been an important consideration for developers. Commonly, they are key factors in the success of any development. Developments which are likely to generate significant amounts of transport should seek to minimise the impact of traffic volumes associated with this - particularly from motor vehicles. Motor vehicles produce greenhouse gases and other air pollutants through their use. A sustainable development should seek to reduce the need for motor vehicle use that is generated from its presence. This will help to promote sustainable forms of access, improve air quality, and ease congestion.
Possible methods to encourage sustainable forms of transport could include:
- Offering facilities such as bike sheds, showers within your development for the use of employees, residents, etc. to encourage people to take more sustainable forms of transport such as cycling
- Situating your development near public transport links such as bus routes, train stations, etc.
Within your development, you should also seek to encourage as wide a proportion of the community to be able to access the development as easily as possible, including complying with the Equality Act 2010.
