In seeking to make any construction project more sustainable, the environmental impact of a developments building materials should be carefully considered. Care should be taken to select materials which have the least negative environmental impact according to their manufacture, use and disposal and recycling.
Materials which can be considered more sustainable are those which are:
- Produced locally (minimises transport costs and associated pollution) and are able to be replenished locally for the foreseeable future.
- Renewable, non-toxic and/or recyclable
- Have a low impact on the environment over their whole life cycle (production, use and eventual disposal).
