The Executive Committee of the Torbay Sports Council has become aware that, like so many other towns in England, Torbay is now home to a greater numbers of overseas visitors than ever before. Many are still young and have taken up work opportunities here whilst others have made it their permanent home.
Although we all meet them during our daily lives, we sense that only very few are joining local sports clubs. Naturally, there are some notable exceptions, but, as a rule, they have been slow to use our local facilities.
The Torbay Sports Council understands that language difficulties, and the etiquettes of joining local clubs can be daunting, but feels that it is down to us, as hosts, to make the first moves to break down these barriers.
On November 1, Torbay Sports Council launched its new “Buddy Scheme” which is designed to make it easier for our overseas friends to become as active as we are, here in Torbay.
How will it work? Just a phone call, or an e-mail is all that is required to put the scheme in to motion.
Simply make the contact, tell us your choice of sport, and we will arrange for a member of a local club to meet you, introduce you, and to spend the first session with you. There will be nothing to pay until you choose to join the club, so there is every opportunity to enjoy “taster sessions” without any financial commitment. Torbay has a huge variety of sports clubs, and no standards of ability or previous experience are necessary.
Why not come along and make new friends, and prove that sport has no language or nationality barriers…you have been invited…now it’s up to you take up our offer!
