Cutting Car Dependancy

Not persuaded by getting healthier?

Not persuaded to do your bit to save the planet from greenhouse gases?

Simply cannot be bothered to incorporate a bit of exercise into your daily routine?

Then check out the car cost calculator - add up the cost of owning, running and maintaining your car!

We’d all like a few more pounds in our pockets, so maybe the way to save is leave the car at home and walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work.

There are many ways to cut your car dependency and books on the shelves of your local library can give helpful, sensible advice to help you take the first steps in becoming less-car dependant.

“Cutting Your Car Use” by Anna Semlyen (ISBN 1 903998 32 8) is a locally produced guide, printed in Torbay, that gives helpful hints and tips on cutting down on our car habit. It is sponsored by Torbay Council and is also printed on recycled paper!

With the Government looking at imposing green taxes, more pressure will be on us all to look at ways to reduce our car miles. As most of us drive to work, knocking back commuter miles is one way of cutting our emissions and lessening the carbon footprint we all leave.

Here are some facts to ponder:

  • At least half of all car journeys in Britain are short enough to be cycled. If they were, car mileage would be reduced by one sixth.
  • In the UK, an average car produces approximately 3.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year Cycling contributes zero to green house gas emissions.
  • The UK is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 8% between 1990 - 2012 as part of the Kyoto Protocol.
