Shopmobility allows people who are unable to walk, or walk far,the chance to hire a wheelchair or electric scooter for a small fee so that that they can enjoy the shops and facilities in town centres. Anyone can use Shopmobility, young or old, resident or visitor, no matter if their mobility difficulty is temporary or permanent.
In Torbay, Torbay Council has set up several Shopmobility schemes. The Council has provided the buildings and equipment, and the volunteers who run the schemes then take up the reins and run the schemes independently. All potential users need is a £2 registration fee plus a deposit of £2.50 for a scooter. The deposit is returnable but many people leave it as a donation, as Shopmobility's are registered charities. Wheelchairs are chargeable at £2 each. Some identification is required and training can be given where necessary. You should always try to book in advance, especially in the summer months. In winter, the shops are open shorter hours. Occasionally, a shop may be closed due to a volunteer shortage, but we try to avoid this where possible.
