Carers Information
Who is a carer?
A carer is someone who has caring responsibilities for a spouse, relative, friend or neighbour, who due to disability, frailty, illness and / or vulnerability cannot manage alone in the community. Carers can be any age and care without pay.
Torbay has a joint agency strategy for supporting carers called Measure Up. This document reflects the increasing recognition of carers' contributions and sets out how services to carers in Torbay will be improved over the next two years (you may also like to view the Measure Up Action plan, detailing the timetabling of these improvements).
There are 8 areas covered by the Torbay Carers Strategy (the following information is provided via the Torbay Care Trust website):
- Information for carers
Torbay Care Trust will develop co-ordinated information services that enable carers to access the information they need at the right time.
- Short Breaks available
Providing regular breaks for carers is an important means of supporting them in their caring role.
- Consultation with carers
Torbay Care Trust aims to increase the effectiveness of agencies' consultation with carers to ensure they can influence the planning and review official services.
- Assessment of carers needs
Any carer who provides or intends to provide a substantial amount of care on a regular basis to someone aged 18 or over, who is eligible for Community Care Services, can apply for a carers assessment.
- Equity to ensure equal access to support
All groups of carers should have equal access to information and support and a clear point of contact to services.
- Health and Employment needs
Torbay Care Trust intends to raise awareness amongst employers of the needs of working carers and encourage adoption of flexible employment policies for carers; to raise the profile amongst carers and professionals of the health needs of carers, and to develop support to maintain carers in employment and/or training.
- Young Carers
A young carer is someone under the age of 18, whose life is affected by caring.
- Advocacy for Carers
A carer is someone of any age whose life is restricted because they are looking after a friend, relative, partner or person who cannot manage without help, because of illness, age or a disability of any kind.
You may be entitled to a range of financial help, including Attendance Allowance; Carer's Allowance; Disability Living Allowance; Council Tax Benefit; Housing Benefit; Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. Torbay Care Trust can provide a free and confidential advice and information service on all welfare benefits.
