Library Membership

Even if you don’t want to borrow books it’s a good idea to join so that you can make full use of the other services we offer. Just visit any Torbay library and we’ll give you a library card as either a Full or Welcome member. As a Welcome member you won't even need to show us any identification and you'll still be able to use our PC terminals and borrow up to 4 items. Full Members can borrow more items and so we ask to see some proof of address (like a current driving licence) before you join. You can borrow most books (and Talking Books)for 21 days and return any item you borrow from one Torbay library to any other Torbay branch (except the mobile library). If you want to keep a book longer, you can renew it online through the library catalogue, or by visiting, writing or phoning the library. All you need is your library card number. If you bring books back late, we ask you to pay a small charge. If your books are over two weeks late, we will remind you by letter. If you need help finding a book (or want some ideas about what to read next), just speak to a member of staff and they’ll be happy to help. Or you can use our computers to search the library catalogue. which lists authors, titles and subjects and shows whether items are available as books or in other formats. If what you want is not in your library, you can reserve it for a small fee. We will do our best to get it for you and let you know when it is ready to collect. If you want to reserve Language Courses, please ask staff for details.

We offer a wide range of titles for hire on DVD, video and CD. They are all available for hire at very resonable prices for a period of 1 week.
