War Memorials

The following War Memorials, Gardens and Fields are situated in various locations throughout Torbay:

10th Battalion Home Guard Memorial

Location: Corbyn Head, Torquay
Granite pyramid shaped memorial with a plaque at the base inscribed - 'In Memory Of Britain's Volunteer Army 1939 - 1944 10th Battalion Home Guard Torbay'. Dedication on 61st Anniversary of the Corbyn Head tragedy when five members of the Home Guard died as their anti-aircraft gun exploded in 1944.

Churchill Memorial Gardens

Location: Berry Head Road, Brixham
Public gardens overlooking the breakwater, laid out in a crescent shape with seating benches surrounding the flower gardens.  A plaque on the western wall describes the site as the Winston Churchill Memorial Gardens.

Churston War Memorial

Location: Churston Common, Brixham
There is an obelisk plinth with flagstone surround set off the main road on Churston Common, approximately 150 yards towards Brixham from Windy Corner.

Churston War Memorial Playing Field

Location: Adjacent to Greenway Road and Brixham Road, Churston.
Playing Field, Children's Playground, 1 Football Pitch, 1 Cricket Pitch and 1 hard Tennis Court.

Dunkirk Evactuation

Location: Gardens, Torre Abbey, Torquay
Base surmounted by free-standing stone tablet. Dunkirk Veterans Association badge at the top centre of the tablet. 'Inscription in black lettering - '1940 Dunkirk Veterans Association Torbay & District Branch to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk'.

Lt Cdr A L Harrison VC

Location: Roundham Head, Paignton
Rough hewn stone of remembrance with dedicatory stone tablet placed on the front face. Badge of the Royal Navy depicted on the upper left of the tablet and VC medal depicted on the upper right of the tablet. Inscribed - 'In memory of Lieut. Commander Arthur Leyland Harrison V.C., R,N. Born in Torquay 3rd February 1886 killed in action during the Zeebrugge raid 23rd April 1918 presented by the members of the Torbay branch of the Royal Naval Association on the occassion of the millennium St George's Day 23rd April 2000'.

Memorial Gardens

Location: Union Street, Torquay
Enclosed Park - The land was originally  purchased to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee Year.

Old Parish Church

Location: Torre, Torquay
Churchyard - Contains memorial stones and over 70 white war crosses to deceased members of the parish. A service is held every year on Remembrance Sunday.

Palace Avenue War Memorial

Location: Palace Gardens, Palace Avenue, Paignton
War memorial sited at the eastern end of Palace Avenue Gardens.  There is a memorial in the form of a tall plinth surrounded with decorative chains.

Princess Gardens War Memorial

Location, Princess Gardens, Torbay Road, Torquay
Three steps lead up to the base surmounted by a square double plinth, column and capitol. Whole is surmounted by a metal urn. Dedicatory inscription carved into one side of the stone base and names on metal plaques attached to the sides of the plinth. Inscription - 'To the memory of the men of Torquay who died in the Great Mar MDCCCCXIV - MDCCCXVIII and to the memory of the men and women of Torquay who died in the Second World War MDCCCCXXXIX - MDCCCCXLV whose names are to be found inscribed in the book of remembrance in the Town Hall'.
