Refurbishment hailed a success

The eagerly awaited £900,000 makeover of the Palace Theatre in Paignton is nearing completion - on time and on budget.

The keys will be handed back to Torbay Council next week as Torquay builders ROK roll out.  Over the last nine months the theatre has been totally refurbished to include new fixed tiered seating offering great views of the stage, disabled access and parking, increased bar area, upgrade to the fire and security alarms, essential building repairs, refurbished toilets, new front entrance steps and ramp and improved interior lighting.

Cabinet Member Councillor Jeanette Richards, said:  "The Palace Theatre has been at the heart of the Paignton community since the 1890s and has a long and proud tradition of fostering the young talent of Torbay and in maintaining and enhancing its cultural life.

"This is a very exciting time for all those involved in the project including the Friends of Palace Theatre, who have raised a tremendous amount of money towards the refurbishment, as well as enthusiastic theatre-goers from Torbay and beyond."

Councillor Colin Charlwood, Heritage Champion, said:  "The Palace Theatre has been in danger of falling into disrepair for many years and I am delighted that the council has been able to work with the community to help save the building and bring it into the 21st Century for future generations to enjoy.  It will also compliment the heritage enhancement works that have already taken place along nearby Winner Street, which has been received well be local residents and traders."

Representatives from Torbay Council and the Friends of Palace Theatre will be present from 10am.

The work was funded by Torbay Council (£765,000), Friends of Palace Theatre (£75,000) and English Heritage (£68,000).
