Equal Opportunities & Work-Life Balance
At Torbay we operate equal opportunities and anti-bullying/harassment policies. We welcome and encourage applications from people from all communities - both nationally and locally, recognising that a diverse workforce is beneficial for the organisation and community it serves.
All candidates will undergo a selection exercise based upon pre-determined 'essential' and 'desirable' criteria.
As a 'two-ticks' disability symbol holder, if you have a disability, you will be guaranteed an interview if you meet the 'essential criteria' only. Disabled applicants may also contact our partner organisation for a full range of assistance when applying for jobs in the Council. Assistance includes help in completing job application forms, attending interviews, on-going support/workplace adjustments if required.
Our employment equal opportunities policy is contained within the Counci's full Equality and Inclusion Policy and Scheme.
Monitoring our Equality Policies
If you apply for a job you will be provided with an equal opportunities monitoring form. We are actively monitoring and analysing statistical data of our workforce and job candidates in order that we can ensure our policies are effective. This process is detached from the selection process.
Working Lives
We offer a wide range of "work life balance" options and "family friendly" benefits. In the majority of arrangements, the Council has adopted a policy to provide more than the 'statutory minimum' to reflect that it values employee contribution and recognises that employees value a better work-life balance, whatever their circumstances.
Arrangements include the following:
- 37 hours full time working week
- Part time and job share opportunities, as well as term time only options (particularly in our Schools)
- Flexi time (where appropriate) - our standard scheme allows 18.5 hours credit; core hours are 9.30am to 4pm and the scheme is available up to and including 'Assistant Director' level. All we ask in return is that work is carried out in an efficient and effective manner at times to meet the needs of the service.
- Good maternity, paternity, maternity support and adoption schemes
- Childcare vouchers
- Paid compassionate leave and time off for certain duties, emergencies and parental leave
- Career break scheme
- Annual leave (Bank Holidays are in addition):
- 22.5 days (Salary Scale 1-6)
- 23.5 days (Scale SO1-P3)
- 25.5 days (Scale P4+)
- In addition, employees receive an extra day's leave for every completed year of continuous local government service up to a maximum of 5 days and an extra day's leave after 15 years continuous local government service.
