Housing Associations & Registered Social Landlords

Most Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) are housing associations, but there are also trusts, co-operatives and companies. They run as businesses but do not trade for profit; any money made is ploughed back into the organisation to maintain existing homes and help finance the building of new ones. These Housing Associations and Registered Social Landlords are registered with the Housing Corporation. The Corporation is responsible for their Regulation and Investment Management. The Audit Commission also carries out regular inspections.

Housing Associations are organisations set up to provide homes for people who cannot afford suitable, local housing. In many respects Housing Associations and the Council share the same aim. The two kinds of organisations therefore work together. For example, the Council may provide land or money to enable a Housing Association Scheme to be built, in return the Housing Association will take tenants nominated (or chosen) by the Council.

Housing Associations have an excellent track record of delivering regeneration through partnerships with Local Authorities, Developers, Landlords and other stakeholders. In Torbay, the Associations have already delivered major successful projects, however much more needs to be achieved to meet local housing demand and to improve the built environment, working with local communities and the Council.
