Recycling really does make a difference
While recycling reduces the reliance on landfill space we, there are also other environmental benefits which are less widely appreciated which mean it is a crucial activity in combating climate change as the following key facts show:
- On average every person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every seven weeks but up to 60% of what is in those residual waste bins (on average) could actually have been recycled instead
- Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours and it takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminum than it does to make it from raw materials
- The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials and it takes 40% less energy to recycle glass than it does to make it from raw materials
- It takes 24 trees to make 1 tonne of newspaper, therefore, for every tonne of paper recycled, 24 trees will be saved
