Caring for the environment is a long-term commitment and every time you recycle an aluminium drinks can, or kilo of foil, you know you are helping save large amounts of energy, which really mount up to something big over the months and years.

Now you will also be helping grow native trees, both here in the UK and in Africa: a tree for every tonne recycled.

Alupro is working with Tree Aid, a Bristol-based charity, to grow trees in Burkina Faso, West Africa. The project is based in the Gabio Forest, in Sissili province, where a well-established local organisation is building a bee-keeping and woodland management programme with five village communities.

The trees from our programme will be grown by the Gabio project’s own nursery, and planted in village forests as well as on neighbouring land owned by individual families. The trees grown as a result of your recycling activity - mango, cashew, baobab, néré and acacia - produce food and medicines, and are also species which will help boost production of honey, to generate much-needed income for local people.

In the sub-Saharan dry lands of Burkina Faso, bush fires, firewood cutting and clearance for agriculture are all threats to the sustainability of the forest and the people it supports. Tree Aid works with local people, on local solutions, and has an excellent reputation in the area.
