Private Water Supplies - What is a private water supply?

In general terms a private water supply are those which are not provided by a water company i.e. it is not connected to a "mains" pipe. The source of the supply maybe a well, borehole, spring, stream or pond. The supply may serve just one property or several properties through a network of pipes.

Protecting your water supply?

Safe drinking water is essential to good health. All private water supplies can pose a threat to health unless they are properly protected and treated. They may become contaminated with bacteria, protozoa, parasites or other substances. Many of them are harmless, but some may cause serious illness.

Monitoring your supply

Local authorities are required to monitor the quality of all private supplies, although depending on how many people use the supply the frequency of this may vary. There is a charge for this service and you can arrange for this service. Alternatively you can arrange for your own test using a private laboratory. If you supply water to other people in the course of a business, you have a duty to care towards customers for the safety of water you supply.

For further information on how to protect your supply or request sampling please contact Environmental Health, Alternatively the DWI Drinking Water Inspectorate can supply additional information.
