What are we looking for in an employee?
We are looking for 'self starters' who are committed to customer service, want to make a difference to the community and who want to develop their potential.
What is it like to work for Torbay Council?
We are going through a period of significant change to ensure improvement both to our services to local people and to improve the way we operate. We recognise that our main asset in achieving improved services is the people that we employ and we have therefore made ‘valuing employees' one our main priorities. We have also introduced an Employee Suggestion Scheme so that our employees are rewarded for good ideas.
We are committed to developing ourselves into a good, modern employer. We have a “staff charter” which sets out the Council’s pledge to learning and development. We also recognise that our staff have commitments outside work and we are therefore further developing our ‘work/life’ balance policies so that we can help the people who work for us to juggle aspects of their lives.
The Torbay Setting
Located in Devon, on the south coast, Torbay is made up of three towns - Torquay, Paignton and Brixham - and a number of other small settlements. Looking over the beautiful Tor Bay, each of the three towns, although close together, have their own separate characteristics. Snuggled between Berry Head and Hope's Nose, much of the thin border of countryside between the built up area and the Torbay boundary is an area of outstanding natural beauty or of great landscape value. With plenty of beaches and its warm climate, Torbay is one of the most successful tourist resorts in the country however, there are still significant areas of deprivation and the economy is largely a low wage economy with relatively high unemployment.
Jobs are based all over the Bay in different offices and centres. A number of jobs are based at the Town Hall, Torquay, nearby offices (Roebuck, Tor Hill or Union House), or Oldway Mansion in Paignton.
Torbay can be easily reached by road or rail and has regular bus services operating from/to and around the bay. The M5 motorway is approximately 15 miles away, linked by the A380.
