How are school menus set & can I view them?

Menus are now set on a 3 week period and current menus for all Torbay schools can be viewed on the  website. Menus now reflect the government’s new food-based standards for school lunches that came into force in September 2006. Menus also comply with the governments new nutritionally based standard that became mandatory for primary schools from September 2008. Standards will become mandatory for secondary, special schools and pupil referral units for September 2009.

We fully welcome the recent efforts made through the press and media to raise the profile of school meals. Both the School Meals Service and  have been working together over a number of years to change menus in order to incorporate all aspects of healthy eating.

What goes into a school meal?

The make-up of a meal is based upon the 'Wheel of Good Health'. This reinforces the need for meals to be balanced. A meal should be made up from a range of food types including fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates (e.g. bread, rice, pasta or potato), protein (essentially red or white meat, fish, and alternatives), foods containing fat or sugar and milk and dairy products.

It is therefore vital that all children have a balanced diet and do not stick to only a few types of foods all the time. We feel that our menus show a good range of products with over 30% of which are bought locally.

The School Meals Service,  and other agencies are planning to work with schools and parents to help with encouragement and acceptance by children of our school meal service.
