New Primary School at Foxhole

In Autumn 2004 a review was undertaken of primary provision in Torbay. One of the proposals to come out of the review was the proposal to close Foxhole Infants and Foxhole Junior Schools and open a new primary school on the site of the existing junior school.

Statutory notices were published to that effect in March 2006 and in May the Council agreed too implement this proposal.

The implementation is now well underway with the aim of having the new school open by September 2008.  The new primary school will offer education for 420 pupils aged between 3 and 11 years.  Like the existing schools, the new school will also have a nursery and specialist teaching units.

Programme

  • Detailed Design and Procurement (Sept 2006 – June 2007)
  • Construction (July 2007 – Sept 2008)
  • Completion of landscaping (Sept 2008 – Nov 2008)

Project Update

  • Detailed Design and Procurement

The design team have been busy developing plans for the new school. Main features of the design include:

  • arranging the class bases along the central circulation walkway referred to as ‘the street’
  • the street which will provide areas for break out/resource preparation and for interaction between pupils
  • the pairing of class bases so that they can share common facilities such as cloak areas and group rooms
  • colour coded entry pod from the playground to each class base enabling pupils to identify with their class as ‘homebase’
  • the zoning and grouping together of certain areas such as part of the ICT Suite and the hall, this then enables specific areas to be available for community use after school hours whilst other areas can be made secure to prevent unauthorised access
  • the provision of external spaces for community use

These plans have been approved by the Planning Department and the team is now working on the more detailed design.

Consultation Update

Throughout the whole design process, the team have been consulting with various interested parties including the staff and pupils of the two existing schools.

During the summer term 2006 the pupils met with the design team to talk about things they liked and disliked about their current schools and to give their opinions on design features that have been used in other new schools.  Design features that the pupils liked and would like to see featured in their new school included:

  • classrooms with interesting curved walls
  • resource ‘streets’ and resource spaces with lots of light and space to be able to sit in
  • use of colour route markers on floors in corridors so you know where you are in the school
  • sun shading next to the classrooms to sit under for lessons outside
  • exercise and balance tracks distributed around the school site
  • an outdoor class with a canvas covered reading area and timber bench seating

As well as the school community the design team has been consulting with the local community.  A public exhibition was held in the autumn term 2006 providing parents, residents and others an opportunity to view and comment on the plans.  The feedback received was certainly very useful and highlighted some concerns from neighbours of the school site about traffic congestion, parking and site security.  These concerns were noted and will be taken into consideration as the design and scheme are developed.

As the project progresses further consultations will be carried out, details will be provided in due course via this website and the schools.
