BSF Torquay Community College Rebuild

Torbay Council has been awarded £22.2 million by the Government in order to re-build one secondary school.  Following wide consultation, the Council has decided to re-build Torquay Community College (TCC).  The Council believes TCC is the school that would benefit most from this investment as the present buildings date from the 1930’s.  Combining new buildings with new ways for learning will make a big difference to the students and the local community.

The grant is part of the Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, which is the Government’s long term plan to re-build all secondary schools.  This project is one of a select few BSF Pathfinders. This means that TCC will pave the way for other schools in Torbay and the rest of England. Other schools will be rebuilt in a future BSF programme over the next ten years.  The school will feature many of the exciting ideas found in the BSF programme, including the assistance from consultants working with the BSF schemes taking place around the country.

Torbay Council and TCC have an exciting vision for the future of the school. This vision takes into account national initiatives and local priorities.  A major feature of the project is that of ‘Transformational Change’.  It means using the re-build to find new ways to approach learning, gain additional skills, further enhance opportunities for students and provide new facilities for the local community.

As a Pathfinder School, TCC will be at the leading edge of education both in Torbay and at a national level. The major aspect of the vision is that the re-built TCC is placed at the centre of an exciting reform of learning for the 14-19 age group across Torbay. The new school will have a Centre of Vocational Excellence and the intention is that the school should be a specialist Technology College.  TCC will become a centre of academic and vocational excellence offering a wider range of courses to its own students and students from other schools. Students will be able to study a full range of courses, including GCSE, BTEC, NVQs and the new Diplomas. There will be a specialist skills centre on site.  Re-building the school offers a unique opportunity to transform the learning experience. This will further enhance the way in which TCC will serve its students and the community as a whole.

The plans for the new school were approved by the planning committee which means that the project team can now move on and look at the more detailed design such as room layout and furnishings.
