Teenage Pregnancy

The Government’s Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, launched by the Prime Minister in 1999 required all local authorities to have measures in place to meet an ambitious target of 50% reduction in teenage conception rates by 2010.

Torbay’s Teenage Pregnancy Action Plan works towards the government targets in reducing the unplanned conception rate at a local level. The plan aims to improve the way we work with young people and provide access to advice and information. It also ensures strong partnership with all agencies that have a role in reducing teenage pregnancies and includes health, education, social care services, youth support services and the voluntary sector.

As part of this plan we are currently undertaking a review of the level and consistency of sex, relationship and drug education in all secondary schools across the Bay. The findings will help us develop targeted ‘risk taking’ behaviour education to meet the needs of young people, target resources and additional training to staff and provide additional support that young people value. Information will also be provided to parents and carers to support them in talking to their children about sex and relationships enabling them to make informed choices in life.
