In support of Parental choice, exercising it’s discretion, the Council normally provides transport to the designated Selective and denominational school, subject to the statutory walking distance rules.
The Designated Area for transport is the set boundary around a school for which transport is provided, subject to the statutory walking distance. Please note that a designated school for transport is not necessarily the nearest school.
This policy is explained in the TIPS 6 booklet (see Related Documents).
Following the Introduction of the Education & Inspections Act, new arrangements have also been put in place for transport assistance for low income families. These new arrangements only apply to new pupils starting in year 7 from September 2008 only.
All new year 7 students are assessed for transport entitlement. All students who are assessed as entitled on selective/denominational grounds or who may be entitled under low income grounds are contacted in the summer term. Details of how to apply and payment information is also enclosed.
For all current year 8-11 students, the transport entitlement is reviewed on an annual basis and students are contacted in the summer term to confirm if they wish to continue with the transport assistance.
If you have recently moved into the area or you have moved address please contact the Transport Team to request a re assessment as you may be entitled to assistance following the change of circumstances.
The current cost of a Denominational/Selective Travel Pass is £230 for the full 2008/09 academic year. You can also split the £230 payment to 9 x £25.56 monthly payments, or termly at £85 for Autumn, £72.50 for Spring and £72.50 for Summer.
You can pay by the following methods:
If you receive free school meals you will not be required to make a contribution. Also, students from families on low income in receipt of certain state benefits are also exempt. These benefits are:
If you are entitled under the new low income grounds, the additional benefit is:
Please note that a copy of the evidence is required in order to ascertain exemption. However once entitlement is established it lasts for the whole academic year even if benefits cease.
When a child is eligible for assistance with travel to school, it is a matter for the Council to determine the mode of assistance which is safe, secure and cost effective. Arrangements include public bus route, ferry, contract coach, contract minibus, contract taxi, parental petrol acknowledgement or walking escort.
Photos are required for travel passes. Please visit the Modes of Travel page for further information.
An appeal can be made against the council’s decision on entitlement to assistance. Please visit the School Transport Appeals page for further information and guidance.
