What You Think
Young people from Engaged and Teen Network Torbay say if adults make decisions on behalf of, or that affect, children and young people they should have a chance to say what they think and express their opinions because:
- “We are the ones affected by adult decisions.”
- “We can! We want to be part of the community.”
- “We are capable and want to feel proud of ourselves helping the community.”
- “Young people are capable of negotiating to improve things for others.”
- “We are as good as adults at making decisions.”
- “We should be heard because we have our own views on things.”
- “We can change negative opinions and perceptions of children and young people.”
- “The UN Rights of the Child says it’s our right to be involved.”
- “There should be no hierarchy when it comes to adults and young people. Inclusiveness means all people – adults and children.”
- “We are not “just kids”. Don’t underestimate us.”
- “Young people know best about the issues that affect them. What it is like to be a young person now, in this time, in this place.”
- “Young people like to talk and listen to other young people. They may want to talk to us rather than you!”
- “Young people have lots of ideas and energy.”
- “Young people know how to make things fun and can make it fun for adults too.”
- “Young people are the future. The next adult generation!”
