Joining the Library

How Do I Join?

If you are age 16 or above you can use the full range of library services once you have filled in an application form and shown us proof of your name and address. For this, we need to see just one item from the list below:

  • Driving licence
  • Current TV licence
  • Pension book
  • National Health Service medical card
  • Council tax bill
  • Benefit book
  • Services card and number
  • Book prescription
  • Keep it Moving Traveller Card
  • Gas, electric, telephone or water rates bill
  • Bank or building society statement
  • Wage slip with address

Note: Items shown here in bold type need to be less than 4 months old

Never too young!

It's easy and FREE for children too (from 0 years upwards!) A form should be completed on behalf of any person under 16 years by a parent or legal guardian and official proof shown if that person is not already a library member.

Once you have joined, you will be given your own library ticket which you may use in any library in Torbay (except the mobile library, which you are free to join separately).

Please keep your card safe. If you lose it please inform us immediately so that we can prevent anyone else from using it.

What can I borrow?
When you first join you may borrow

  • 4 books
  • 2 recorded sound items
  • 2 DVDs or videos (adult members only)

When you have been a member for 3 months you may borrow

  • 10 books
  • 5 recorded sound items
  • 5 DVDs or videos (adult membership only)

Books may be borrowed for 21 days. Recorded Sound items and videos are issued for 7 days and are subject to hire charges. If you are registered with the library as chronically sick or disabled, recorded sound items are issued for 21 days free of charge. Please ask a member of staff for details.

Please see our table of Library Charges which apply to the late return of books and the hire of DVD/video and recorded sound.

Return Anywhere Policy - many happy returns!

Did you know that any items you borrow from a Torbay branch library may be returned to any of Torquay, Paignton, Churston and Brixham Libraries? We hope this service will assist you with the return of your library items.

Note: At present, items borrowed from the mobile Library can only be returned to the mobile.

Avoiding charges

Library Charges can soon mount up! Please try to return library items by the date shown on the date label. If you are unable to return books on time, you can renew them via the Library Catalogue. Alternatively, please ring any Torbay library and renew them over the phone. It helps us if you have your library card(s) or the books with you when you do this. We need either your borrower number (beginning BB.....) or the numbers on the barcode at the foot of the date label in each book.

Note: We regret that we cannot renew cassettes, CDs, videos or DVDs. Please return these items on time to avoid further hire charges.

Mobile Library

The mobile library makes both weekly and fortnightly stops at dozens of locations around Torbay, and membership is FREE! You're welcome to be a member of both the branch libraries and the mobile library, but you will need to join each separately. All we need from you on the mobile library is proof of your name and address (a benefit book, electricity bill, driving licence etc).

Note: Although you can return items borrowed at a branch library to any other branch, anything you borrow from the mobile library must be returned only to the mobile.
