Cockington Walk
Cockington Walk
Cockington is an ideal place to take family walks – even in winter!
There are several areas to explore in and around Cockington, however the walk detailed here is a push chair route. In addition to the walk below - there are around 460 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland to discover. Cockington has a pub, gift shops and several tearooms, along with pay and display car-parks and toilet facilities. Please refer direct to the establishments for opening times.
Cockington Manor is open to the public. Push chair / wheel chair access is available through the main front door – and also at the rear of the property on the first floor - reached via the “Rose Garden”. Once again – please check for opening times direct with the centre. There is a riding stable and sensory play area at the rear of the building. The play area is specially designed to accommodate less-able bodied children. Cockington Church is situated next to the Manor House. Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust are based at Cockington, and offer a varied programme of activities for families throughout the year. Their extensive web site is well worth a visit!
Features of this walk

The Walk
- The walk starts in the main visitor car-park in the centre of Cockington. Leave the car park and head towards the village centre, the "Old Forge" and gift shop. Next to the shop there is a short but steep hill sign posted “To Cockington Manor”, which you should follow. At the brow of the hill there are some double wooden gates – go through the gates passing the beautiful thatched gate house on the left.
- Just after the thatched gate house you will come to a junction near to the large mill stone. Follow the path to the left towards the stone bridge. Go under the bridge following the signpost down hill to the Gamekeeper's Cottage*. Near the building is an information board detailing further woodland walks. This building is presently used by Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust for educational activities.
- Continue on this path as it descends toward the lakes. There are areas further down the path where it is possible to sit close to the water to view the wildlife. The path is steep in places.
- The paths around the lakes are mostly smooth going, but are uneven in just a couple of places! Follow the path until you leave the lakes behind - continuing down hill to the Gothic style "Lower Lodge". The path now joins Cockington Lane. For a shorter route back to the car park turn left here. Otherwise retrace your steps back towards the lakes, this time following the wider path up hill and to the right of the lakes.
- At the signpost, follow the route up hill and under the bridge towards Cockington Manor and church. The Manor will soon come into view at the far end of a long driveway. After visiting the Manor, return to the car park following signs for Cockington Village Centre. If you do not wish to visit Cockington Manor, turn right and return to the car park.

Cockington Lane joins the A3022 Torquay to Paignton Road at Livermead.
Proceed to the village centre via Cockington Lane. The walk starts in the main visitor car park in the centre of the village. This is a pay & display car park. During low-season only, free on-road parking is available in parts of Cockington Lane. Check existing road signs for times of permitted parking to avoid the attention of keen traffic wardens!
Cockington Village Bus Service operates between Torquay Pavilion on the sea front and Cockington village centre. Alternatively - board the number 12 service which runs between Torquay and Paignton. Alight at Cockington Lane. Walk along Cockington Lane as far as the junction with Old Mill Road. At the junction you will find a gate leading to the public foot path through the meadow. This route is occasionally muddy in wet weather, however a raised board walk is provided in areas prone to flooding. Follow the path through the meadow to Cockington. Near to the "Old Forge" is a sign for Cockington Manor which you should follow as indicated below.
Horse drawn carriages operate within the village, and it may be possible to hire one to take you back towards the bus stop at the end of your walk. The carriages operate from the village centre and from outside Cockington Manor. Please check locally for times and prices.
Collect your Stamp
*The stamp is hidden in a small wooden box on the reverse side of the interpretation board, next to the Gamekeeper's Cottage.
**
Alternative extended walk. (Not suitable for pushchairs). You may wsih to explore the woodlands whichcan be easily accessed via the path beside the Gamekeeper's Cottage. As a rule of thumb - walking up hill in the woods will take you further away from your starting point. To return to the lakes and Gamekeeper's Cottage follow down hill paths!
