Broadsands & Elberry Walk

Broadsands & Elberry Walk

About the Walk

The walk from Broadsands Beach to Elberry Cove and Marridge Woods incorporates a little woodland walking along with some coastal scenery. The walk is unsuitable for push chairs.
Broadsands is a wide sandy beach, very popular with families. Elberry is a steep shelving pebble beach with a designated water-ski area. Marridge Woods are situated close to Elberry Beach and form part of the periphery of Churston Golf Course. Broadsands has a large pay and display car-park.
Toilet facilities and a kiosk selling refreshments are available at certain times.

The Walk

The walk starts in Broadsands pay and display car park. Walk towards the beach. As you reach the promenade - turn right and follow the path along the shore line until you come to the end of the beach. Follow the path up hill and go through the gate leading onto the common which borders the coast line.
  1. The path follows the coastline with views towards Brixham, rising gently before dropping down towards a metal gate.
  2. Go through the gate and continue until you reach a fork in the path where you should take a left, following the steps down to Elberry Beach. This is a designated water-ski beach and is often quite busy in summer. If you venture into the sea to paddle or swim - look out for the marker buoys denoting the water-skiers approach and exit lanes.
  3. Continue to the far end of the beach where you can see the building which was once Lord Churston's bath house. There is a wide gap in the stone wall. Follow the steep winding steps until you find yourself facing a stone wall.
  4. Turn left and continue to the end of the wall heading into the woods. Turn right following the path through the woods heading inland. This path follows the edge of the woods with views of open fields to the right. Stay on the path until you come to the end of the woodland and a small crossroads of woodland paths. Veer right and descend until you arrive at the metal kissing gate which you should pass through. If you reach the golf course - you've gone too far!
  5. Once through the gate - turn sharp right and follow the long straight stony lane to the end, going through the metal gate and towards a small clearing. Collect your stamp!*
  6. Take the path to your right which leads back towards the coast. Follow this path down hill keeping left until you reach the coast.
  7. Turn left to follow the coastal path back across the common to Broadsands car-park where you began your walk.
*(The wide farm lane to the left is a road used by farm vehicles and ultimately leads back to the main entrance to Broadsands car park). This may be a preferred route in winter when easterly winds are blasting the coast!)

By Car

Take the road signposted "Broadsands Beach" at Churston on the B3199 next to Churston Library. Follow the road down hill passing under the viaduct until you reach the main entrance to Broadsands pay and display car park at the bottom of the hill on the left.

By Bus

There are several points between Brixham and Churston from which this walk may commence.
  • For passengers from "Churston Library" bus stops.
Walk in the direction of the shops and follow Broadsands Road down hill under the viaduct to car park where the walk begins. This route adds considerable extra effort to the end of the walk, when you return to the bus stop in an up hill direction!
  • For passengers from "Windy Corner" bus stops.
Alight at Windy Corner and head towards the sea (which should be clearly visible)! Cross Bascombe Road and walk across the grass heading down hill toward the trees. As you walk along the line of trees you will come to a steep pedestrian path leading through the wooded area and directly on to Broadsands Road. As you emerge from the trees on to Broadsands Road - turn sharp right following the foot path down hill. Stay on this road until you reach the main entrance to Broadsands car park where the walk begins.

Fun Things To Do

Collect your Stamp

At point 6 of the walk where you enter the small clearing, look ahead towards the hedge grow opposite. There is a short path leading slightly up hill towards the pitch and putt course. You will see a metal barrier with a stone wall on each side.
Look along the stone wall on the left to find the wooden box containing the stamp. After collecting your stamp - descend once again to the main path and head towards the coastline to return to Broadsands.
