An annual form is sent to every property at the end of August / beginning of September. The form asks for details of who will be resident at the property on the national qualifying date of 15 October. If you moved house after 15 October then you can also complete the application form. You do not need to contact your old council if you have moved into our area - we will do that for you. There are special rules about names being added to the list during an election period - please check with us if you want to apply during such a time.
No, the form should be completed by the current occupier, i.e. whoever lives in the property. It doesn't matter who owns the property. (The landlord should register wherever they currently live).
Credit reference agencies are increasingly using the register to carry out credit checks. If you are not registered your credit rating could be affected and you may have difficulties getting credit e.g. car loans, mortgages, opening a bank account or even getting a mobile phone.
The electoral register is published every year at the latest by 1st December and is active until 30th November the following year. However, monthly updates are produced in addition to this where your name will appear within 4 weeks of application unless where an Election is due this length of time is increased.
If you have received the annual form all you need to do is cross out your surname on the form, and write your married name near to it so that it is clear that it is your surname that has changed.
