South West Regional Development Agency Grant Approved
RDA Commits £280,000 to Brixham Regeneration
The proposed multi-million pound regeneration of Brixham has moved a major step forward following a £280,000 investment from the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA).
The South West RDA is funding a series of detailed studies that must be carried out before decisions can be made on how to progress the £16.5 million regeneration scheme.
Proposals for the town have been drawn up following widespread consultation.
They include commercial and residential development on the waterfront, new employment sites and premises, a replacement fish market, redevelopment of the town centre multi-storey car park into retail, parking and residential use and major improvements to the Lanes area of the town to make it more attractive to visitors.
The research and feasibility studies will look at how the projects could be delivered and will include site surveys, wave modelling, environmental impact assessments, housing capacity studies and outline proposals for improvements to the Lanes.
Stephen O'Higgins, operations and development manager at the South West RDA said: "This work is essential so that everyone has a clear picture of what can be done and how it could be funded. It is a real step forward in bringing lasting economic benefits to Brixham and is part of the RDAs wider investment in the Torbay area."
Richard Morgan, chief executive of Torbay Development Agency, said: "This is a very important step forward as not only does it give us the resources to properly plan the Brixham Regeneration project but it shows that SWRDA have a degree of commitment to the project. Now with this momentum behind us we can be hopeful of things happening on the ground in the new year."
Community partners Brixham 21 also welcomed the announcement with Peter Bushell of Brixham 21 saying "We warmly welcome the announcement of this valuable grant from the Regional Development Agency. Were delighted. Its more good news for the scheme and will help enormously in developing our proposals."
