Someone detained in hospital

If someone living in your home is being detained in hospital or other place by order of a court and without them only one ‘adult’ lives there, you can apply for a 25 percent discount on your council tax.

Tell us someone is detained under the mental health act

You may not have to pay council tax if a property is unoccupied because someone:

  • Is being held in a hospital or other place by order of a court
  • Is detained under the mental health act 1983

We will need to see the court order or letter from the doctor who applied for the detention.
