Universal Credit is being rolled out fully in Torbay from September 2018 and will affect most working age people on Housing Benefit.  Find out how this affects you on our Universal Credit page.

The current processing time for new applications and changes to benefit claims is an average of 6 weeks. If you contact us with a general enquiry online we will reply to you within two working days.

The amount you get depends on the amount of your rent, whether you rent privately or from a social landlord, and your household income and circumstances.

Most claims are paid using Local Housing Allowance (LHA) but there are some exceptions:

  • Properties owned by a social landlord
  • Properties where the tenancy began before January 1989
  • If you live in a caravan, mobile home, houseboat or hostel
  • Accommodation where any meals are provided as part of the rent
  • If your Housing Benefit started before 7 April 2008, as long as there’s been no break in claim or address change
