A second Hatfield Cross roundabout
On the afternoon of Monday 11 December 2017, there was a serious accident involving a car and a motorcycle at the Hatfield Cross junction in Torquay. An accident here was probably inevitable at some point as it's quite hard to get out of Upton Hill, especially as it's an uphill manoeuvre from a stationary position and people tend to ride the clutch in order to grab any opportunity to pull out. Cars that come around the existing roundabout from Hatfield Road often don't indicate early enough, or even at all, to turn into Upton Hill which makes it worse, because drivers miss a chance to get off the hill and then become frustrated. I feel that this situation could be eased somewhat and, more importantly, that the danger of another serious accident could be reduced, by the addition of a second roundabout at this junction so that traffic coming down St Marychurch Road has to give way to vehicles exiting Upton Hill.
